Evil White Insurance Agent Defrauds Black Medicare Patients
July 30, 2008: Insurance agent John W. King, 28, was arrested Wednesday in Metter on state charges that he forged the signatures of an elderly couple on applications for Medicare Advantage.
Bernice, 73, and Crawford Dunson Jr., 76, were sitting at home one day when King knocked on their door.
“He sat right in my living room and told us he was there to update our insurance,” Crawford Dunson said.
The Columbus couple believed King was there looking out for their best interests.
As it happened, he was looking out for his own.
“Agents can get up to a $600 commission for each person they sign up,” said Glenn Allen, spokesman for Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine.
The couple did not realize their insurance had changed until Bernice Dunson had to be taken to the hospital.
“We got a $400 bill for the ambulance and a $700 bill from the hospital,” Crawford Dunson said.
Because King had changed their coverage without their knowledge, Medicare would not cover the hospital bill.
